Baseball and a sunny day

and I forgot my damn camera! Yesterday officially kicked off my son Phillip's high school baseball season (well, sort of), it was a scrimmage game, but a game non the less and it was a beautiful, sunny day. We hauled the family an hour and a half north and after arriving at the field I noticed I didn't have my camera. Oh well, it felt good to plop my butt in a chair on a gorgeous day and relax and watch a ball game for two and a half hours - and do NOTHING else. Phillip was happy, he started at first base and then also played some left field. I felt so lazy the rest of the day that I decided to do NOTHING the rest of the day. Baseball season kinda does that to me. Hey, NOTHING wrong with that once in awhile, right?

Well another busy week of work and school for me coming up... Has anyone seen a good movie lately?

Got to run - today's a busy day, unlike yesterday :(

Have a wonderful week,
Paula

Look Ma, a swollen finger

So yesterday we make the drive all the way to Colchester (close to a 2 hour trek) to watch our sophmore son's basketball game.  It was our first time there and we were told it would take an hour and 45 minutes tops to get there.  We arrive almost 2 hours later to a game that is just about to start the second quarter - CRAP.  We hike up the bleachers and find seats and scan the court and benches for Phillip.  No Phillip.  I look all around the gym and across the way I see a man talking to him and wrapping his right fingers and handing him an ice pack. Ends up he was in at the start of the game and 4 minutes later jammed his right index finger and was out the entire game with an ice pack.  He was not happy.  Oh well, they won so that was nice.  Still going strong with only one lose this season :)

Better scoot - time to take the Christmas decorations and tree down  :(  I'd rather be sipping hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire and reading a good book.

Oh where oh where has December gone...

Oh where oh where can it be...?  Seriously.

We have had sickness in our house since the end of November and by the time we are just getting over one thing, another sickness hits and spreads right through the house again.  It's enough to drive a mom batty.  Will the coughing ever end?  My damn hands are RAW from washing them so much and the lady at Rite Aid must think I own stock in Lysol, Dimetapp and Tylenol.

So through all the illness I managed to get through my three finals for my college classes this past week - YIPPEEEE, I am done until January 22nd!!!!  Such a GOOD feeling.  My son Nicky Nacky finished up his finals at UCONN this week as well and Tony (at UMASS) will wrap his up by next Thursday (good luck Tone).  We are looking forward to having you guys home for the holidays :)

Everyone around me seems to be having a baby.  Really.  Suddenly, so many women I know are pregnant or having a baby, which is great, don't get me wrong, but I am starting to feel...OLD.  And I noticed that most of the bambinos have been - girls.  Two of my colleagues recently had little girls (Kate and Annie) and just today we got the news that our neice had her baby 4 weeks early-and wouldn't you know-a baby girl, Carly Jane.  Don't you just love these names - Kate, Annie and Carly - so adorable.  We need some boys!

Basketball season for my guys is going well.  Even through all the illness my butt's been planted in the gym three nights a week.  Phillip's JV team is 4-0 and J's team is 3-1.  Keep up the good work guys, you're doing great.

I've been listening to my Christmas music for the past couple weeks.  I just love Christmas tunes.  I think my favorites are Winter Wonderland, Silver Bells and Joy to the World.  I know the kids get sick of hearing Sleigh bells ring...are you listening....but it's only one month out of the year, come on.  Give up your Rage Against the Machine and Slightly Stoopid for just the month of December will ya.  The music helps get me in the holiday spirit, what can I say.  My Christmas shopping is done, cards are done, wrapping is almost done, we bought and trimmed our tree today (2 weeks late this year but oh well), and now all that is left is - the BAKING. Next week I hope to spend hours in the kitchen with some of my most treasured holiday recipes - and of course eating the stuff is THE best part (scale, what scale?)

Enjoy the holidays everyone - they pass so quickly. Oh, here is a dark and blurry picture of our Christmas tree that J took tonight - I think we need a new camera Santa.

Christmas_tree_2007_003 MWLM winter mags have shipped out with our cover feature on Rock Star Momma Skye Hoppus so watch for those in your mailbox - and online starting Monday, the 17th!  Have a super week!

So we traveled to Brattleboro, Vermont Saturday morning (2 hour trek) for Phillip's first official basketball game of the season.  Coach told the boys that this would be one of the toughest teams they play this season and guess what?  We won!  The boys did a super job on the court and it was a nail biter, but final score 37-34 - great defense.  Congrats St J :)  Next game, Friday in Mt Mansfield - Go Green!

About last night...we had a blast!  We love Boston to begin with-such a great city, but the Boston Music Awards 20th anniversary was so cool!  And our seats were right up front at the stage.  So much musical talent in that city let me tell you and so many awesome performers up for nominations...I won't be listing everyone here...Joey Kramer and Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith were there.  The pop teen singer JoJo was there (loved the sparkly rhinestones on the eyelids thing, how do they do that?).  Click Five - now there is a really good group of young guys who attended Berklee College of Music, got together and formed their band and BOOM, they are hot, singing JENNY...and do you remember Bobby Brown, you know, married to Whitney Houston years ago?  He was there to be inducted into the Boston Music Hall of Fame.  God, I remember dancing to his songs back when I first got married (long ago...) RONI...MY PEROGITIVE baby.  He is so FUNKY and the diamonds on his fingers weren't too shabby either.  Augustana was great (lead singer/keyboardist had an awesome voice), Matt Nathanson awesome, Martin Sexton-incredible voice...all this great talent I didn't even know about.  So, as I mentioned the other day, Lori McKenna was going to be there performing and was up for awards....well....she won Album of the Year (major) for Unglamorous.  Yay Lori!!!!  It was great to see her performing Witness to Your Life with her band - they were super.  Watch for Lori who will be featured in Mom Writer's Literary Magazine summer 2008 :) Congrats to all who were nominated and all the winners! It was certainly a night to remember.

OK, it's late and this mama is ready for bed.  Here are some shots of the show last night (not in any particular order)...

Boston this weekend

It's almost here.  The Boston Music Awards.  So cool!  I have been looking forward to this weekend all month.  I hope to get some good pictures and we really lucked out to get front row seats.  The kids are super psyched.  Should be fun...anyone else going?

So I had my butt planted in the basketball gym tonight for a scrimmage game.  The official season starts in a couple days for my 10th grader and we are hiking 2 hours (each way) for that one.  Oh well, what else do I have to do...?

Here is a b-day pic of Nick (19 years young) from last week - my how he has grown...

Have a fab weekend!

Playing soccer...and guitar

What is with this weather in Vermont?  It is September 28th for god sakes and it feels like mid July!  Sticky and hot when it should be cool and crisp.  The leaves are falling and they haven't even changed their color!  We are going to go straight from summer to winter again I just know it.  I'm ready to unpack my sweatshirts already - it is football season, right?  Totally gyped this fall...

Soccer season is a go however and such fun.  The two younger boys (Phillip and Joseph) are doing great this season - I just love soccer.  Why the hell we have to drive all over the state is beyond me.  Like tomorrows game for instance...We'll be driving over 4 hours to watch an hour and a half game.  Gotta love it.  I guess that's our Saturday...my rear in the chair on the sidelines while my son is running his rear off on the field.  At least somebody is getting a workout.

Phillip is the one in white and green:

I am SO excited!  My guys are teaching me how to play guitar!!!  Well, it's not the first time for me. About 5 years ago I started to take piano and guitar lessons which lasted a couple months but just couldn't keep up with the schedule and I stopped - stupid of me, I know. So, I've recently decided to add more to my overflowing plate of work, 3 school classes and my family responsibilities and will be learning to play the acoustic guitar. Yay!!  I also have started back to writing song lyrics which I did years and years ago and then never did anything with, so that has been exciting - now to make music to go with those lyrics is my next trick...and did I mention that I sing too ;)  I'm just excited to be doing all of this with my kids - such fun!

OK, time to get back to the school books - I can sing and play guitar later...

Have a great weekend everyone!

Soccer mom and good times with a friend

Happy September!  I LOVE the month of September (and October). My favorite time of year here in Vermont.  If you have never been to the state, especialy during the fall season, you just have to visit - it's gorgeous :)

Soccer season has started for my guys and once again I've morphed into soccermama for the next month or so.  I love it though - so much exercise for the kids and for me, running my mouth and screaming from the sidelines...It's a great game, really.

I had a great day last Friday.  My girlfriend Deb and I went out for lunch for my birthday at a new spot we've never lunched at before and it was wonderful - plus the girlfriend chit chat time means so much...thanks Deb :)

Have a super week everyone!

~Paula

Happy Happy, Joy Joy

That is how I feel right about now.

It is late afternoon-I have finished working for the day, I've walked on the treadmill for my exercise today while reading Jodi Picoult's novel My Sister's Keeper (great read), and I am in the mood for a good movie tonight with a good friend.  Has anybody seen Freedom Writers?  I'm looking forward to it - with some popcorn and a sprite, of course.  So ready to relax and unwind......Yes!

As for basketball season - well, for my one son in high school the season is winding down.  He has one more regular season home game and then his tournaments begin.  This mom is sad to see basketball end :(  I LOVE the game.  As for my youngest son, the season goes through February so that is cool - GO Hilltoppers and Red Devils!!

So, we head to Boston - again - this Sunday (Logan airport) to pick up our oldest Rugrat who is returning from his trip to Florida - then we return him to his home at UMASS Amherst.  I'm sure he is looking forward to hanging with his college friends again - and getting back to the books...NOT!

OK, I'm outta here.  Time to feed the family, grab the car keys and disappear - Freedom Writers here we come!!!

Ewww, one more thing...Here is an adorable pic of my son Phillip and his sweet friend Becky :)

Well, it's November 18th and basketball season is on its way - YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sportsmom that I am, I am doing the HAPPY DANCE as I LOVEEEEE basketball.  Phillip, my freshman in high school made the freshman team as a starter and has begun practices 6 days a week.  Congrats Phildog :)  My son, Joseph, his practices start Thanksgiving weekend and he is a starter on the middle school team with his father coaching again this year.  Basketball is such a great game!  An awesome workout and FUN to watch - and play.

Anyways, oh, yes, today is my son Nick's 18th birthday!!!  Happy Birthday Nacky!  He is at his brother, Tony's college this weekend and today they are hanging out at a UMASS home football game - GO MINUTEMAN!!  He is coming home on the bus this weekend and I am SO psyched as I have not seen Nick in almost 3 months!!!!!  Can you freekin' believe that?!  I do NOT like to be away from my children that long - no wonder I am cranky.

So, my oldest son, Tony, will be coming home on the bus on Wednesday (day before Turkey Day) - YAY!!!  I have not seen Tony for 2 1/2 months - wow, where the hell is the time going I ask you?

My little gal, Anna banana is doing great and we are all excited about Thanksgiving.....Mmmmm, I can taste all the yummy foods already.  We will have a fresh 15 pound turkey with stuffing, sweet potatoes, homemade mashed potatoes, squash, cornbread, cranberries, stuffed celery, deviled eggs, pumpkin pie, apple pie....good lord, get the wheelbarrow to cart me away from the damn table!  Then it will be off to the treadmill...

Oh, I just finished Sue Miller's Lost in the Forest, which was an interesting story....I think I liked her novel While I was Gone better.  I have just started reading Lolly Winston's new one, Happiness Sold Seperately and I think I'm going to like this one - I read Lolly's first book and she has a bit of a humorous streak in her writing and stories where you would not expect it - so, hey, if I can laugh along at a time of sadness, then that is all good for me.

Anybody out there planning to read or have already read Running with Scissors?  This one is on my Christmas Wish List :)

Guess I'd better run and wrap Nacky's birthday gifts so he can open them tomorrow...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone - Enjoy!

So, I just finished a fabulous read the other night, one I'm sure you've heard of - may have even seen the movie some years ago...Bridges of Madison County.  Yes, I am turning into a helpless romantic in my older age.  You remember the movie - where Meryl Streep plays Francesca, the lonely housewife married to a conservative (boring) farmer in Iowa.  Then an out-of-state stranger (photographer) comes to town and she decides to get jiggy with him...yea, that's the story, you remember now.  All kidding aside, it is really a beautiful story and so well written. I saw the movie years ago and decided to read the book last week ( I was in a mood).  It is a quick read and very well worth the time.  My next novel...The Emperor's Children by Claire Messud.

Well, it's soccer season and it shows.  I have been away from my home and desk constantly playing the role of soccermom.  It's fun.  I am starting to enjoy soccer more and more over the years.  Only two of my four boys are playing as the older two are in college and are more interested in hoops right now.  My younger guys - Phillip 14 and Joseph 11 are the soccer players this year. Joseph's first game is coming up next week - GO J! and Phillip's freshman high school team has played three games so far against other school's JV teams.  Phillip is doing well. He has scored in every game so far and runs his butt off out there on the field.  He looks good in green.  The kids on the team call him Dr. Phil...go figure :)

The Tunbridge World Fair has come to town.  Where I live in Vermont, there is a huge world fair every September that plops into a town near mine for four days and nights.  My youngest son, Joseph, looks forward to this big event all year long.  He could pitch a tent and just sleepover for the weekend and that would be all good with him.

Kids.  They really enjoy the simple things in life which is so nice.
